Frequently Asked Questions

Are solar water pumps for fountains worth it?

Yes, solar water pumps are worth the investment. They use the power of the sun for optimal operation which means savings for you. What’s more, these high-quality pumps are long-lasting and require very little maintenance.

Will the solar water pump get submerged in my pond — or sit beside it?

It will depend on the pump. Solariver’s solar water pumps will need to be submerged in water for them to work properly. Please note that the pump must be placed in water before plugging it in or else it will not work. If you are using our solar air pump product this pump does not get submerged, it sits on the ground near the water source.

How deep does my pond water need to be for my fountain solar pump?

For the solar water pump to work in your pond, it will need to be fully submerged in water. And most can work as shallow as 5 inches or as deep as 20 to 30 feet below the surface. It is worth noting that Solariver’s solar water pumps have dry-run protection— should the water get too shallow, the motor will not burn out.

How far can a solar pump push water for a fountain?

There are a few different factors that will determine just how far your fountain’s solar pump can move water. If the pump is being used with fountain attachments you can expect a 2-4 ft spray from the small pumps, 4-6 from the medium and large pumps with significantly more water volume from the larger pumps.  If connecting to a water feature or when using the pump to move water for another purpose, the small pumps have a max lift (head) of 4.9ft, the medium pumps are 5.9ft, and our largest 9.8. See a comparison of all our pump products here.

How long do solar pumps last?

Solariver™ pumps use brushless motors that with proper care should last 3 to 5 years, or longer. Keep in mind that this depends on how well the pump is cared for and maintained, as well as environmental factors.

What should I do if my solar water pump is no longer working efficiently?

If you find that your solar-powered water pump has slowed down or has stopped working altogether, it may be clogged and require cleaning. Regular maintenance is necessary for cleaning and caring for the unit — and to ensure its longevity. Watch videos on each Solariver™ solar pump models on our YouTube Channel here.

Do solar pond aerators really work?

Yes, when set up properly and placed in direct sunlight, solar pond aerators can be highly effective at oxygenating the water, keeping it clean, and providing a healthy ecosystem within it. A solar pond aerator is essential for a thriving pond.

What are the disadvantages of a solar pond aerator?

While there are many advantages to choosing solar aerators, there is one obvious potential disadvantage— the need for sun. They work best with full, direct sunlight but will still get some power on a cloudy day.

Unfortunately, applications without access to sunlight due to any type of obstruction may result in the inability to function properly, if at all.

Will a solar pond aerator work at night?

Because solar pond aerators use the sun’s energy to function, they will not operate at night. However, we do offer a battery pack for our solar air pump to extend the run time up to 6-8 hours after sunlight.

How often should you run your pond aerator?

You want your solar pond aerator to run as much as possible. Keep it plugged in and running at all times so that you are sure to get the most out of the daylight hours. Most applications, including fish ponds, can be effectively aerated with 6-8 hours of daily run-time.
